The chicks have been taking more and more interest in the world outside the nest. Little heads have been raised enquiringly above the play-pen palisade with wide eyed orange iris stares into the wider blue yonder. They are starting to track Dad in as he flies over them (hopefully with a fish) but as they will not leave the confines of the nest until the day of their fledging (at about 8 weeks old) judging distance will be a bit of a problem. On the day of the Big Jump it’s bad enough concentrating on being airborne without the hazard of not knowing if your chosen landing place is 8 feet or 8 yards away.
An instinctive behaviour seems to be coming to the fore to help deal with this – the head weave. The chick fixes its gaze on an object and then moves its whole head in a snake wise side-to-side action. Owls often display a similar technique but the adult ospreys rarely do. Possibly the slightly different views the young bird gains from this give an enhanced 3D effect – rather like the principal behind stereoscopic pictures. Certainly that fantastic background panorama gives them plenty to work on!

I began this series back in 1999 with the intention of creating a set of postcards. I’m yet to finish the last two which will be ‘taste’ and ’smell’

These are the glasses made from the prescription written by the optician located in the high street in the middle of Camberley 11 years ago which apparently is wrong since my eyes are now better not worse so I don’t need to wear these ones which I don’t wear that often but I need to wear my new ones which I need to wear more according to the prescription written by the optician located on the Mezzanine of the indoor shopping centre in the middle of Norwich.

It was tricky getting the Lighting exactly the way I wanted, but it’s close enough to what I had in mind!
.. No one’s brains were blown out during the making of this photograph. All rifles depicted here-within bear no resemblance, intentionally or otherwise, to any real rifles still in service, recycled or retired from active duty!
